Physical and Chemical Properties

Nitric Acid (HNO3) is a clear, colorless to slightly yellow inorganic acid. It is a strong monobasic acid and a powerful oxidizing agent.

Nitric acid is a highly corrosive mineral acid. The pure compound is colorless, but older samples tend to acquire a yellow cast due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen and water. Most commercial available nitric acid has a concentration of 68% in water.

Application

1. Its aqueous blend is used for cleaning food and dairy equipment owing to its ability to remove precipitated calcium and magnesium compounds with ease, such as australia etc.

2. In fertilizer production, it is used for manufacturing fertilizers such as calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, etc.

3. Used in making dyes and drugs from various coal tar products

4. Used in for making nitrate salts such as ammonium nitrate, silver nitrate, calcium nitrate, etc.

5. Used to separate gold from other materials, such as yemen etc.

6. In explosives industry. It is used for manufacturing explosives.

7. Used in science laboratories at schools for experimenting when specifically testing for chloride.

8. Used in the field of medicine in its pure state as a caustic to get rid of chancres and warts.

Storage

 Do not store near combustible materials. Do not store in direct sunlight. Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from metals. Store away from alkalies. Separate from organic materials. Inspect periodically for damage or evidence of leaks or corrosion.
